The Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program would like to share
this wonderful video with you. CLICK HERE to watch...and be inspired!
Just as Daniel was fitted with
customized orthopaedic supports that allow him to skate, we also
arranged for one of our Komets players to be fitted with special
orthotics that support his ankle enabling him to skate much more
proficiently. These orthotics were designed and made by Holland
Bloorview a treatment centre in Toronto where I previously worked. This
was the first request that the centre
had ever received for orthotics to be used inside a pair of skates.
It
is interesting to note that recently it was discovered by a doctor in
Toronto that some children with Cerebral Palsy who have a great deal of
difficulty walking, surprisingly, can run with ease. So why not try
skating? This was true of our adult daughter who has CP when she was very
young.
This past season the Kawartha Komets program, whose mandate is
"Making Dreams Come True", was given the gift of a piece of therapeutic
equipment called a Kaye Trainer from a company in Ohio called UCT.
Using the Kaye Trainer is the safest way for an individual to learn to
skate without the risk or fear of falling. If you look up "Kaye Trainer
Capital City Condors" YouTube video you will see this apparatus being
used. It is amazing! The Komets are anxious to share this piece of
equipment with those who would like to try skating but never thought it
could be possible. The Kaye Trainer can be used for children, teens and
adults.
